DOCTORS is a medical drama about a highly skilled surgeon, Dr. Kosuke Sagara, who tries to rebuild a corrupt hospital where patient care is relegated to second place and doctors only care about getting promoted.

After being employed for 12 years at a university hospital and a one year sabbatical, Dr. Sagara accepts a job at Dogami General Hospital, which has become dysfunctional.

Dr. Sagara has a cool and almost aloof disposition that does not let others learn his real thoughts and intentions. He is kind to his patients, but he is fed up with the doctors seeking favor to power and fame and Dr. Sagara uses any means he can think of to maneuver them to do what he thinks is right...

In each episode he creates situations, often using highly political or somewhat shady methods, where the doctors have no choice but to do their best and Dr. Sagara gets what he wants. On the outside, Dr. Sagara professes that he wants to make the hospital successful purely for his own personal reasons, but slowly some doctors start to see that deep down, his only motive is to do the best for the patient.

Dr. Suguru Moriyama, the heir apparent of the hospital, is especially offended by everything Dr. Sagara does. Although he throws a tantrum every time he thinks Dr. Sagara is getting the longer end of the stick, Dr. Sagara gradually gains allies and the hospital changes for the better.
