Kotone is a geisha in Kyoto.

While she was sleeping after a night of drinking, her fellow geisha Yukino was killed.

She is falsely accused of murder.

Kotone is sent to jail for 5 years and treated as a person of note by prison officers.There, she is bullied by her cellmates, but survives through her wiles. Her cellmates were asked from the prison officers to make Kotone commit another crime, so that her jail term will be longer.
